by James Wadman, The Wonders of Writing
I think of a story as a series of incredible moments strung together with incredible descriptions of the simple things in life. Everyone loves to write the “wow” moments of a story and describe the thought provoking, wonder inspiring, the shocking, the aweing, and everything between. However, reality isn’t a perpetual sequence of awe. Reality is a sequence of simplicity that builds into brief reminders of how beautiful our world is. Then we fight to allow those moments to sustain, we hold on with dear life to the memories, but so often we become simple again like small warriors fighting again for the next moment of awe. Therefore, simplicity is something we must define in literature as one of the most valuable components of reality. And in our daily lives, let us appreciate that simplicity and the rare wondrous moments.
